Edward Burtynsky Talk

Tonight we had the pleasure and the privilege of attending the Edward Burtynsky talk at the Museum of Nature on his series Oil.  Tickets were hard to come by and the place was packed.

It was great to hear Burtynsky talk about his process, the stories behind the images and his views on the environment and humanity's affect on it.  We also got a peak into his next still and motion series Water which looks amazing, and of course got a first look at the Ottawa showing of Oil.

Thanks to the Museum Of Nature for putting on a great talk and show.  For those who love photography go see Oil it runs until September 2, 2013. 

Valerie C. Burton | Street Fare

Photographer, author and photo instructor Valerie C. Burton is having a show of mixed media images called Street Fare.

The show is at Guild Galerie 240 downtown in the market.  The vernissage is Thursday, May 30th from 6-9pm, click here for directions.

Edward Burtynsky: Oil Exhibition

On May 31 one of Canada's greatest photographers, Edward Burtynsky, is coming to the Canadian Museum of Nature to give a talk about his series Oil.  

The talk accompanies the exhibit, Edward Burtynsky: Oil, that will run from May 31 to Sept 2 at the Museum.

All our students know Burtynsky from the History of Photography class so we hope they come out to see these beautiful large scale prints in person.

Inside Out is a global art project transforming messages of personal identity into works of art and as usually it is very cool.  HBO is making a movie about him and this new project.

Michael Graeme Ross & Rémi Thériault | Relocation

Alumni Michael Graeme Ross and Rémi Thériault are having a show at the Council for the Arts.

The show is called Relocation and depicts fictional narratives set in the Ottawa urban landscape:

"We have re-interpreted the factually realities of why these people now inhabit this particular city using carefully selected locations, situational ambiguity and natural light to create a series of narrative portraits. This involved the use of Ottawans, props and large-format film cameras to produce the high-detail images."

The show runs from May 17 - June 7 the opening reception is on May 17 from 5PM to 8PM.

There are about 8000 still images shot over 2 days, the Exhibition Setup and the day of the Exhibition.

Contact Photography Festival

The Contact Photography Festival starts today in Toronto.  This years theme: 

"Exploring the photographic medium as a way of seeing, this year’s Festival theme, Field of Vision, frames a series of primary exhibitions and public installations. In museums and galleries, on city streets and subway platforms, these presentations reveal a shared interest in photography as a visual paradigm, one that structures how we imagine scenes, places, and events."

The festival runs from May 1 to 31st at many different galleries and public spaces through-out Toronto.

Dylan Leeder | Alumni Update

Alumni Dylan Leeder is having a show this December in Toronto and the opening night is tomorrow, Dec 5th.

The show is at the Steam Whistle Brewery and also features the work of Maria Jose Govea so if you are in TO stop by to check it out.

Willie McElligott's Love Affair With Ottawa

Ottawa photographer Willie McElligott is having a show at the Michael Gennis Gallery.  The show titled, A Love Affair with Ottawa, runs till November 10 and showcases images from his book Ottawa Canada.

Nuit Blanche

First Year Student Bradford Burk was out and about during Nuit Blanche.

He had a great time and he was kind enough to send us some photos.  Above is the image of Andrew Balfour's show and beside a performance being projected on a wall.

Bradford highly recommended the event, so for those that missed it this year make sure to get out next year to see the event.  Below are paintings his girlfriend churned out that night during the show.  Thanks for the pics!!

Andrew Balfour | Nuit Blanche

Alumni Andrew Balfour has a show during Nuit Blanche called Beautiful People.  This collaborative series of portraits shot with Scott Sigurdson shows people reacting to flash cards of a wide range of content.

The show is at EQ3 in the Byward Market it starts tonight Saturday Sept. 22 at 7PM and runs till 10AM Sunday.  Stop by and say hello to Andrew and Scott from 10-11PM.

PHOTOSHELTER Luminance

On September 12-13 PHOTOSHELTER held a conference called luminance in New York.  This conference was on the business, tech and culture of photography today.  Unfortunately given the start of the school none of the Faculty could attend.

We have been surfing the internet looking for highlights from the conference and we have found a few interesting articles we would like to share:

Genevieve Thauvette's La Filles du Roy

Alumi Genevieve Thauvette's La Filles du Roy is on display at St-Laurent + Hill Gallery during Nuit Blanche on Sept. 22.  

Nuit Blanche is an international art festival held around the world in participating cities that runs all night.   This year it is comes to Ottawa and there are many great shows to see around town.  So get out on Saturday and take in some of the shows.  

If you have never seen Genevieve's work we highly recommend it, check out her site to see even more of her amazing work.  Also check out this Ottawa Citizen article to find out what she will be doing on Sussex and Rideau during the event, hilarious!!  

Toronto PD - Day Two OCAD U

OCAD U  

This afternoon we headed down to OCAD U to talk to Faculty and Staff of the Design and the Photography Programs.  It was great to connect to Faculty from other Photo and Imaging Programs and discuss the state of the photo and education industries.

Besides talking shop we got a tour of the Photography Facilities by Peter Sramek the Photography Chair. One of the highlights of the tour was seeing the INTAC show by the OCAD U Photography Students and Students from TAMK in Tampere, Finland and Chung-Ang U in Seoul S. Korea.

The OCAD U Photography Students created works in collaboration with TAMK and Chung-Aug U Students.  The work is great and talking with the Students about their collaborative experience was very interesting.   Below is a clip of Professor Denine Wrixon talking to OCAD U student Shanon Fujioka about her collaborative work You and I Are.

We would like to thank the Faulty and Staff Peter, Guy, Deanne, Beth and Gayle for taking the time to talk with us and for showing us around.  Also thanks to Darien in the Photo Cage for the Hasselblad hook up.

Toronto PD - Day One Jill Greenberg

The second show we took in today was  one that we had been looking forward to for some time, Jill Greenberg's Glass Ceiling.

We are all fans of Greenberg's work and the staff of the O'Born Contemporary gallery were very nice to show us behind the scenes to see some of Greenberg's older images, yes the Monkey Portraits and Horse Series.

This show is definitely worth a look and Ossington St. is a great little neighbourhood full of cool stores, galleries and restaurants.

Toronto PD - Day One MOCCA

Every two years the Program Faculty travel to other College and University Photography Programs.  This is a fact finding trip and a great way for us to connect with others Photography Professors, discuss current trends and teaching techniques.

This year we are spending all of our time in Toronto and we have the pleasure to take in some Contact shows. This year's Contact theme is Public, meaning a lot of street photography, sweet!!  Here are some highlight from Day One.

Our first stop today the Museum of Canadian Contemporary Art (MOCCA) to take in a few things, one was the public instillation by Scott McFarland.

Inside the MOCCA there is two great shows Public: Collective Identity | Occupied Spaces and Street View.  Two of the highlights of the Public: Collective Identity | Occupied Spaces show was Bill Sullivan's Stop Down series.

And Michael Wolf's Tokyo Compression both are a great series of images.

The Street View show was a collaboration between MOCCA and the National Gallery of Canada it showcased some of the best street photographers of all time Cartier-Bresson, Weegee, Model, Levitt and Callahan to name a few.

It was great to see the works of these masters first hand along side contemporary street photographers.   For those that have never been to the MOCCA definitely stop by it is a beautiful gallery and they have some great upcoming shows, the curators and staff are extremely knowledgeable and very friendly.

2012 Algonquin Photo Exhibition

Thanks to all the Students who helped setup the Exhibition yesterday the room looks great.  This year the 39th Annual Photography Exhibition is in room CA105 in the new ACCE building at Algonquin College.

The Exhibition kicks off at 12 noon today and runs to 9PM, the Awards Show starts at 7PM.  For all the details on parking and how to get here check out the Program Site.

Scotiabank Photography Award Finalists

The Scotiabank Photography Award finalists have been announced.

Arnaud Maggs, Fred Herzog and Alain Paiement are all competing for this coveted prize and the $50,000 that come with it.

The Scotiabank Photography Award was co-created by renowned Canadian photographer Ed Burtynsky.

The winners will be announced before this years Contact Festival in Toronto where the winner will also have their own show and a book published by Steidl.
