Grange Prize | Jo Lunghurst



Photographer Jo Lunghurst has won the 2012 Grange Prize.

"Each year, the Grange Prize pits two Canadian photographers against two from another country."

The winner receives $50,000 dollars quite a nice prize.  British photographer Jo Lunghurst won for her series of images called Other Spaces that documents the experiences of elite gymnasts and The Refusal which is about breeding show Whippets.

Jessica Deeks | Alumni Update

Alumni Jessica Deeks has been included in the 2012 edition of Exposure.  What is Exposure you ask well it is a photographic competition put on by artistwanted.org to showcase:
"Photographers of all backgrounds who are able to speak exquisitely in the language of lenses and aperture. Our goal is to find talent from around the world and award everyone who participates in ways large and small."
Jessica definitely does speak exquisitely in the language of lenses and apertures, below are some of her amazing images.

James & Sandra Zagon Honoured

This evening at the Annual Media & Design Hall of Fame Gala James Zagon was inducted into the Media & Design Hall of Fame.  This honour was presented posthumously to his wife Sandra Zagon.

Along with a very generous donation of James Zagon's photographic gear Sandra founded the James Zagon Memorial Scholarship here at the college.  This is an annual Scholarship that awards two to three Photography Students with a scholarship of $750 each since 2003.  

Once again the Staff, Faculty and Students would like to thank Sandra and James for their generosity and support of the Photography Program and photographic education.

TO DONATE TO THE JAMES ZAGON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND:

If you would like to donate to the James Zagon Memorial Scholarship Fund click this link www.canadahelps.org, search for the Algonquin College Foundation and then select the James Zagon Memorial Scholarship Fund from the Fund/Designation drop down menu.

The fund is currently at $60K which earns interest and it is this interest which will continue to be given to needy and deserving photography students at Algonquin College, thank you.

2012 Media & Design Hall Of Fame


This year at the Annual Media & Design Hall of Fame we are inducting photographer James Zagon.  This will be presented posthumously to his wife Sandra Zagon.

James Zagon was the photographer at the Bank of Canada and upon his passing he donated his photographic gear to the Photography Program.  Also in 2003 Sandra Zagon setup the James Zagon Memorial Scholarship.  This Scholarship has since awarded annually two to three students with a scholarship of $700 each.

The Faculty, Staff and Students would like to congratulate Sandra and thank her for her continued generosity and support of the Photography Program and photographic education.

School of Media & Design Award Nominee 2012

Kaleigh Middelkoop has been nominated for the School of Media and Design Award 2012.

This award is presented to a graduating student within the School of Media and Design who has demonstrated achievement in leadership in program-related activities, application of learning outcomes for the benefit of others and excellence in reaching the learning outcomes of the program and applying the knowledge to higher levels.

Congratulations to Kaleigh on the nomination, the winner of this award will be announced at the Graduation Ceremonies on Tuesday June 19, 2012.

Jason Machinski NISOD Award Winner!!


Our Program Professor Jason Machinski was presented with the NISOD Excellence Award 2012 at the President's BBQ by Kent MacDonald, Vice-President Academic.

The NISOD Award of Excellence is given by the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development.  NISOD is an organization "dedicated to the professional development of faculty, administrators and staff; and to the continued improvement of teaching and learning, with the ultimate goal of student success."  NISOD awards, post-secondary school faculty and administrators across North America each year with this distinguished honour, to recipients who showcase outstanding leadership and organization that contributes to student success.

Jason, a.k.a. "MacGyver" has garnered a hugh following to his program Blog and Website and is responsible for the visual branding of the Photography Program.  Congratulations "buddy", you definitely deserve this award, from all the students, staff and faculty!

Scotiabank Photography Award Finalists

The Scotiabank Photography Award finalists have been announced.

Arnaud Maggs, Fred Herzog and Alain Paiement are all competing for this coveted prize and the $50,000 that come with it.

The Scotiabank Photography Award was co-created by renowned Canadian photographer Ed Burtynsky.

The winners will be announced before this years Contact Festival in Toronto where the winner will also have their own show and a book published by Steidl.

For those that like books on the art of photography check out Steidl they have amazing photo books.   For those that like to see some great photographs check out the Contact Festival in Toronto starting in May.

The 2011 Grange Prize

The Grange Prize has two Canadian photographers square off against two International photographers, this year from India.

The is awards $50,000 to the winning photographer and the images are on display at the AGO in Toronto from August 30 to November 27.

School of Media & Design Winner 2011

Brittany McElroy has won the School of Media and Design Award for 2011!!!!

As previously mentioned this award is presented to a graduating student who has demonstrated achievement in leadership in program-related activities, application of learning outcomes for the benefit of others and excellence in reaching the learning outcomes of the program and applying the knowledge to higher levels.

She received her award yesterday, Tuesday June 21, 2011, during the Convocation Ceremonies at the new Ottawa Convention Centre, congratulations Brittany!!

Marie-Claude Leveille Desjardins Scholarship

Desjardins has awarded a $5000 dollar scholarship to Marie-Claude Leveille a 2011 graduate from the Photography Program.  Above is a photo of Marie-Claude and Roger Leduc, president of the Caisse Populaire Val Caron inc. and Governor of the Fondation Desjardins of Ontario.

The scholarship also allowed Marie-Claude to show off her photographic skills as she got to photograph the Tulip Ball which Desjardins also sponsors, part of the Canadian Tulip Festival.

Thanks to Desjardins for such a generous donation and encouraging our students to follow their dreams.

Lynne Cohen Wins Scotiabank Photo Award

Artist Lynne Cohen wins the inaugural Soctiabank Photography Award, the prize $50,000 a book deal with Steidl and a curated show at the 2012 Contact Festival.

Lynne Cohen is famous for her artistic interior architecture photos from her series  Occupied Territories.  Hopefully this will influence some of our students who never seem to be keen on shooting their Architecture Assignments.

Jason Machinski - Algonquin Innovation Award

As most of you are aware, Professor Jason Machinski is our blog master and does not always like to take the recognition he deserves. However, we were lucky enough to attend his acceptance of the Algonquin College Innovation Award in recognition for his outstanding work on the Algonquin Photography Program Blog and Website.

Vice President Academic Kent MacDonald presented Jason with his award at the Innovation Awards and Recognition Ceremony - May 3rd.

Taylor Wessing Winner - David Chancellor


The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize was awarded to David Chancellor this year for his image above.

The Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize is open to emerging young photographers, photography students and professionals.
